DESCRIPTION
A Bigger Park, A Better Park
The design for a new aquatic centre and sports park in the newly created area of Green Square in Sydney is rooted on the idea of maximising the use, the amenity and the functionality of civic sites in dense urban environments where square metres are at a premium.
By rethinking the aquatic centre traditional structure and stacking vertically the different programme elements, the proposal reduces the building footprint from 8000 m2 to 2000 m2 giving back more space to the adjacent park and allowing for a more flexible layout of the other sport areas. Furthermore, by lifting up the aquatic centre we have the opportunity of providing a public pool with a view over the city and the harbour and away from the noise of the street.
To compensate for the additional cost of a vertical aquatic centre, additional programme areas are added to the project in the under croft of the park hills. This additional programme will bring revenue to the project but will also increase the density of activity making the park a more diverse and attractive destination.
