DESCRIPTION
A light box, a colorful interior
The renovation of 63 Etna Street in Gosford aimed to convert a 1960’s house with a very compartmentalised layout and a series of ad hoc additions into a cohesive, bright and airy modern residence.
The existing layout showed that the original house would have been a 2-bedroom dwelling with a rear deck. Later alterations added the third bedroom and an over-sized laundry around a covered alcove.
The result was a very compartimentalised layout with areas of the house disconnected from each other, small living spaces and long and complex circulation paths
Maintaining the house footprint, the renovation removed a series of internal walls to create a unified living area and updated the bathroom layout to tie it to the rest of the house.
The new floorplan combines the living, dining and kitchen areas into one big open space that occupies the eastern half of the house. The redesign provides openings to three sides of the dwelling, bringing in a lot of natural light and surrounding the room with greenery and distant views.
In the western side of the house the 3 bedrooms remain mostly as they were with updates to the location and usability of the wardrobes.
In the middle, acting as a hinge, the bathroom has been completely redone with a simple layout that allows for a more generous shower and added storage. A dual entry improves access from all other spaces, making the house more connected and cohesive.
The kitchen was relocated to the southern wall to maximise the living space and the laundry was redesigned to become an extension of the kitchen.
The original timber floors were refinished in white to add brightness to the space and add a touch of playfulness.
